Home Sweet Home

Home is where the heart is, as they say, and CAWLM can’t think of a sweeter one than Lansing. October’s issue is brimming with ways to keep yours warm and cozy — and reasons we’re so proud to call Lansing our home.

One of Lansing’s bright spots is Suzy Merchant, MSU women’s head basketball coach. Merchant tells of her tomboy upbringing and how her coaching success evolved. Her love for basketball is not all she has brought to Lansing, though; she also shares her philosophy of life and love for community on page 20.

Michigan rolled out the red carpet for Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It. The movie was filmed in Michigan and features Detroit locals. Go to page 26 for CAWLM’s interview with Barrymore and the scoop on her film.

The unique bond of sisterhood is always a special one — but sisters Angella, Lucia and Maria Ahn have taken their bond to the next level as the performance group the Ahn Trio. Learn how they maintain separate lives while travelling the world together on page 24.

What’s a better way to prepare for Halloween than snuggling up at home with a spooky book? Be sure to keep the lights on and the doors locked for these creepy reads featured on page 5.

With so many reasons to take pride in the capital area, how could we not be proud to call it our home? As we hunker down for the cooler weather, October is a great time to warm both home and heart by gathering with the people in our lives and celebrating home.

Suzy Merchant Sports a Love for People that Wins Hearts

When Suzy Merchant bounced into town, the people of Greater Lansing received more than a new Michigan State University (MSU) women’s basketball head coach. They got a small town gal with a big heart set to make a huge impact in the community.

There are a lot of sports figures and personalities that find a cause and spend time making a difference. Merchant doesn’t focus on one specific area, but on the general good of a community that has embraced her.

“I’m involved with many charities … I’m not very good at saying no … I guess I really don’t want to,” said Merchant. “I love to be involved with organizations that help the community. It is especially important when it touches children and women. I also work with organizations that I have a personal connection to, like Sparrow Hospice.”

Winning games is important, but Merchant admitted that family, people and community are what life is all about. Relationships matter whether she is at home, on the court, serving in the community or supporting the biggest Spartan fan — Pat Canning.
